Getting into a fitness routine and regular workout schedule can be daunting, especially for someone who has never done it, or now has to do it under different conditions (aka, living in pandemic times). The good news is that it absolutely CAN be done, and done very effectively by anyone! Not to mention, the person writing this article has worked out from home successfully for many years, including preparing for (and winning!) competitive swimsuit competitions within the pageant industry ;-). The bad news (or other good news, the way I like to look at it) is that you have to be the one to put these keys into the door. I cannot do that for you, but what I can do is hand you those keys and help you along every step of the way. So, here are the 4 G’s to workout success!
GOALS- Let’s begin with the easiest one. Your fitness goals should be well-defined (specific) so that you know where you’re going- like a map. I’ve always used vision boards with inspirational pics and affirmations to help motivate me on a daily basis as I work towards my goals. If your goals are big and lofty like mine, break them up into smaller goals (like by March 1st build up to 5 workouts a week, and by May 1 fit into skinny jeans). When you put a date and a title to something it takes on more meaning, and you are more likely to stick to it. GEAR- this is everything from workout clothes, footwear, equipment and tools. If you’re wearing uncomfortable workout clothes and use soup cans as weights, it’ll be challenging to make the most of your workout. Set yourself up for success with the appropriate gear to make your workouts work for you. That absolutely doesn’t mean you have to spend a fortune on gear, but definitely make a wise investment in the basics, and it will serve you well.
GUIDANCE- This is my favorite one! Classic scenario: gym- goers hop around aimlessly from machine to machine (without proper form, mind you) assuming they’ve done their part to include exercise into their daily/ weekly/ whenever schedule. Cardio warriors go from class to class thinking they’re burning more fat by doubling up, or self-proclaimed fitness/ nutrition coaches recommending a bootcamp and weight loss detox to a nursing, postpartum mother .. all as I gasp in horror, knowing they’re really doing more harm than good. I’ve witnessed everyone from the beginner to the seasoned exerciser partake in these classic fitness faux pas, without seeing or feeling results.. and yet they don’t seek professional fitness help! 😭 Particularly for beginners, this is very tricky because, yeah, you actually do need to learn how to use gym machines, and know what exercises are best for your goals, how many, how often, and so on and so fourth. My point being- PLEASE. SEEK. GUIDANCE. FROM A PROFESSIONAL. 😊

GAME- Last but certainly not least, game- refers to your mindset. Getting your head in the game is a necessary component to WINNING the game. You see, I come from a long-time competitive background starting out in middle school and high school with dance competitions and pageants; so forgive me if this seems a bit much. But, I promise you it’s not! If there’s one thing I learned, it’s that if you don’t have your eye on the prize, you’re not going to get it. You must SEE IT to get it. And you need to see it every. single. day. Now don’t make this a stressful thing. Envision yourself in the best shape, your fitness goals attained. How do you feel? How do you look? What new freedoms has this afforded you? Live that dream, one day at a time with each conscious decision you make- to workout and healthy.
